  Dementia Patient Repeatedly Abused
Posted By Personal Injury Editor

Family members of a dementia patient were shocked to hear that the woman had been repeatedly abused by her care assistant.

According to the official report, the suspect, 43-year-old Paula Hawks, worked at the Chambersburg nursing home where the victim, a 93-year-old woman, lived. The incident was brought to the attention of the nursing home staff by a former co-worker, who witnessed Hawks pinching, hitting and even kicking the elderly woman.

The case was then referred to the Franklin County's Area Agency on Aging, who in turn contacted the Chambersburg police department. After investigating the circumstances, officers arrested Hawks on charges of simple assault. Richard Irwin, the president of the company that owns the home, commented about the incident, stating that "we took immediate action. When we first learned of the incident, we suspended this person." Hawks was later fired from her position at the home.

When someone you love becomes the victim of nursing home negligence or abuse, it is time to call a personal injury attorney who can help.

Nursing Home Shut Down by State
Posted By Personal Injury Editor

New information surrounding the shutdown of a Flour Bluff nursing home has been released by the state. According to this report, there are some serious allegations of nursing home abuse being held against the home.

Back on April 15, agents of the Department of Aging and Disability Services raided the Affordable Quality Care Assisted Living Center. Cameras were brought in to capture the raid intended to take the facility's operating license. Najmeh Nouri Griffin, the owner, appeared disturbed and confused by the raid; however, the most recent report shows that she must have known about the blatant abuse happening in her facility.

The document explains in detail that the center "...abused residents through physical abuse, verbal abuse, intimidation and humiliation." In addition, punishments were given out to the residents, such as two patients that were forced to "wear dirty diapers around [their] necks."

If you suspect nursing home abuse, it is advised that you discuss your concerns with a personal injury attorney immediately.

Illinois Nursing Assistant Steals Medication from a 92-Year-Old Woman
Posted By Personal Injury Editor

A nursing assistant at the Fair Oaks Health Care Center in Crystal Lake, IL, has been arrested after being caught on tape poking holes in the medication patch of a resident with Alzheimer's disease then using his finger to administer the lifted medication to himself. The 25-year-old male was charged with aggravated battery to an elderly person and was immediately fired by the nursing home.

The nursing home set up video surveillance in the 92-year-old victim's room when staff members noticed discoloration on the victim's medication patch. The video captured by the nursing home led to the nursing assistant's arrest.

The local Police Chief noted what a desperate act it is to steal medication from an elderly woman. The defendant apparently rolled the woman on her side and poked holes in her patch with a safety pin to steal Fentanyl, squeezing the patch four or five times to obtain the narcotic.

If you an elderly person in your life has been the victim of nursing home negligence, give them the justice they deserve by working with personal injury attorney.

Elderly Woman Left on Chair for a Month

Charges have been filed against a man and his wife after authorities discovered that the couple left a 94-year-old woman on a chair for nearly a month without care.

The charges were filed against the woman's grandson, Giovan Johnson and his wife Latasha Johnson. According to Fernandina Beach authorities, the Johnsons left the elderly woman, Betty Johnson, on a beach-type chair all day and night for about a month.

When rescue workers found Betty she was severely dehydrated and unresponsive. She was immediately rushed to Baptist Medical Center-Nassau where she was quickly listed in critical condition. Upon examining the woman's body, doctors found multiple pressure sores on the areas of her body that were pressed against the chair for long periods of time. Betty eventually passed away.

Betty moved in with her grandson and his wife in December from a North Carolina nursing home.

Both Giovan and Latasha Johnson remain in police custody on $100,000 bail. Detectives are interviewing caretakers at the nursing home where Betty lived before she moved in with her grandson. They have also obtained a warrant to search the Johnson's house.

Indiana Nursing Home Named in Sex Abuse Lawsuit
Posted By Personal Injury Editor

A sexual abuse lawsuit has been filed against an Indiana nursing home and one of its certified nursing assistants.

The lawsuit was filed by Adell Franklin, 56, who claims a nursing assistant working at the home came into his room and touched him in a sexually suggestive manner without his consent.

Franklin moved to the Golden Living Centers in Merrillville after a stroke left him partially paralyzed. The lawsuit was filed against the nurse, 26-year-old Ismael Golden, and Golden Living Centers.

Golden has yet to comment about the allegations, but in an interview with the Post-Tribune a year ago he claimed that Franklin knew he was gay, and because Franklin disapproved of his sexuality he fabricated the alleged abuse because he didn’t want Golden to take care of him.

Golden has since been fired from the nursing home and charged with misdemeanor battery. He is scheduled to appear in Lake Superior Court on March 1.

The nursing home has refused to comment on the case, since it hasn’t been served with a complaint yet, but did say that it does not tolerate abuse or mistreatment of any kind and that Golden underwent a stringent screening process before he was hired.

Franklin’s lawsuit is seeking an unspecified amount in damages.

If you or a loved one is a victim of sexual abuse in a nursing home, you could have legal grounds to file a lawsuit and collect damages. To learn more, it’s best to arrange a consultation with a skilled nursing home abuse attorney as soon as possible!
