- 44,870 elevator-related injuries severe enough to warrant a hospital or emergency room visit affected individuals age 65 or older between 1990 and 2006
- Hip fractures were the most common diagnosis for this age group
- Three-fourths of elevator injuries affect older women
- More than half of the elevator-injuries affecting older adults were caused by a slip and fall
- One third of elevator injuries were caused by a door closing on the individual
- Injuries caused by wedging a walker into the elevator door was the third most frequent cause of injury
- People 85 years or older were seven times more likely to suffer an injury than people between the ages of 65 and 69.
- Of all types of injuries sustained by older adults, more than half were soft tissue injuries, such as a sprain or a bruise. The next most common types of injuries were fractures and lacerations, as well as finger and toe amputations.
