Small Dog Breeds Often Bite Humans
Posted By Personal Injury Editor

Think that only large dogs are biters? Think again. The New York Health Department found that smaller breeds of dogs, particularly toy dog breeds, are among the breeds most likely to bite and injure humans.  While the pit bull reigned as the breed most likely to bite a human, with 3,505 dog bites since 2008, smaller dogs contributed to their fair share of emergency room visits. Chihuahuas were found to have administered 442 times since 2008, while shih tzus bit people 359 times and poodles were found to be responsible for 272 bites. After a record high for dog bites in 2010, the following year saw a 1.3 percent decline.

One dog behaviorist says that smaller dogs are more likely to attack because people do not see them as threats. People may not be as cautious as they are with larger dogs, thus leading to more provocations and dog bites.  Bit or attacked by a dog?  Take the time to discuss your animal attack with a personal injury lawyer in your city that handles dangerous animal cases.

Humane Society Seeks Information for Dog Bite Case
Posted By Personal Injury Editor

When someone is bitten by a dog, one of the first concerns is whether the animal has rabies. Such was the case of a young teenage girl who was bitten by a dog last week in Nebraska.

According to police reports, the girl was out jogging with her cross-country teammates when she passed by an older couple. They were walking two dogs, a smaller and larger canine, both of which were on leashes. Suddenly, one of the dogs started to nip at her pants, actually piercing the fabric and going into her skin. When she looked up to say something to the couple, they had disappeared.

The Nebraska Humane Society is asking that anyone with information about the couple and/or their dogs come forward immediately. If the agency does not receive word soon whether the dogs were up-to-date on their vaccinations, the girl will have to undergo a series of painful shots.

Anytime people have sustained dog bites and believe dog owner negligence was involved, they should take the time to review their options with a personal injury attorney in their cities of residence.

Protecting Your Family from Dog Bites
Posted By Personal Injury Editor

If you are a dog owner, or know someone who owns dogs, there are many ways that you can protect your family against dog bites.

Whenever small children and babies are around dogs, you must be extra-vigilant. Do not leave children alone in the company of strange dogs. At an early age, teach your children how to approach dogs and how to treat them. For example, you should always ask the owner if the dog is friendly and does it like to be petted.

Let the dog smell you before you attempt to touch it. Areas that you should avoid touching on a dog are its tail and face. Should the dog be sleeping, eating or have puppies when you approach it, do not attempt to touch the dog. When passing a dog, walk, instead of run, as the dog might feel threatened otherwise. And you should always remain calm in the presence of dogs.

Are you a dog bite victim?  Get the legal help you deserve by calling a personal injury lawyer.

Woman Awarded $60,000 for Dog Bite Injuries
Posted By Personal Injury Editor

One woman's dog bite injuries were so severe that she was awarded $60,000 by a jury in Coryell County this month.

Dina Maze worked for Curtis and Racine Moore, owners of an animal ranch, when one day their Rottweiler attacked her as she was feeding him. The Moores are no stranger to lawsuits, however, as they already face multiple charges of animal cruelty, and have had animals confiscated from their property earlier this year.

Maze was awarded $60,000 this week to cover medical damages for her continued treatment; she also listed Gary Friedel, the owner of the Topsey Wildlife Ranch from which the Moores leased property.

Although the Moores attempted to move away to a new location, officials soon arrested them with 10 counts of cruelty to livestock animals, 64 counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals and two counts of illegal dumping.

If you have recently suffered a dog bite, call a personal injury lawyer now to discuss the details of your case.

Supreme Court to Make Decision in Dog Bite Case
Posted By Personal Injury Editor

An interesting case goes before the Indiana Supreme Court this week to decide the fate of a dog bite.

The case involves Misty Davis, a resident of the city of Evansville, on behalf of her 6-year-old son Shawn. She is suing the city, claiming that animal control officers knew that the Rottweiler that attacked her son was dangerous and failed to sanction its owners properly.  The city has a dangerous animal ordinance under which Davis believes the owners should have been warned.

While the trial judge agreed that the city was immune to Davis' lawsuit, an appeals court overturned this  decision back in August. It is now up to the Indiana Supreme Court to decide the fate of Davis versus the city of Evansville.

Are you the victim of a dog bite? If the canine is not your own then you could sue the owner under local and state ordinances. However, before you take any measures, it is important that you discuss your case with a personal injury lawyer.

Dog Bites Rise by 86% in Past 16 Years
Posted By Personal Injury Editor

A recent government analysis shows that recorded dog bites in the United States has risen 86 percent over the past sixteen years. In 1993 the total number of those hospitalized for dog bites was 5,100; in 2008 that number jumped to 9.500.

In a report released by the Department of Health and Human Services for Healthcare Research and Quality, the agency believes that 316,000 emergency room visits in 2008 were a result of dog bites. This means that the daily average for dog bites is 866 emergency room visits and 26 hospitalizations.

This data was culled from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project's Nationwide Inpatient Sample that has information from about eight million hospital stays. As 4.7 million people are estimated to suffer from a dog bite in the US every year, these numbers are of some concern. However, the agency does suggest that a small number of these bites actually result in a hospitalization.

Owner Flees After Dog Bites 10-Year-Old Girl
Posted By Personal Injury Editor

When a dog bites or attacks a person, the dog's owner is often held liable for any damages the victim has suffered. But for one dog bite victim in Northern California, recovering compensation may not be so easy.

Priscilla Robles and her friend were riding their bikes on a trial, close enough for the friend's stepfather to watch them, when a yellow Labrador lunged at her leg without provocation, ripping out a chunk. The dog's owner approached the girl to say sorry, but then took off, never to be heard from again. He didn't offer to help or even call 911 before he fled.

A week and a half later, the 10-year-old girl still had gauze on her leg, covering the wound where a chunk of her flesh had been torn off. The surgeon wasn't able to repair the deep wound. Today, her leg still hurts, and she unable to ride her bike, play soccer, or even play with the other kids at school during recess.

Dog bite victims are entitled be compensated for their injuries, but because Priscilla's mother cannot find the owner, there is no way for her to recover any type of compensation. Instead, she is left to pay for Priscilla's medical care on her own. Making things even worse, Priscilla's mother was laid off from her job, so they have no insurance to cover the cost of her injuries.

If authorities were to be able to locate the dog's owner, not only would he face criminal charges for leaving the scene, but Priscilla and her mother could finally try to recover compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, emotional trauma, and a decreased quality of life.

If you or a loved one has been attacked or bitten by a dog, a personal injury lawyer can help you file a lawsuit against the dog's owner in the hopes of recovering maximum compensation!

Maid Files Dog Bite Lawsuit Against Wealthy Family
Posted By Personal Injury Editor

The long-time housekeeper of one of the world’s richest families has filed a lawsuit after being bitten by the family’s English bulldog.

The lawsuit was filed in Manhattan Supreme Court against the Santo Domingo family of Colombia. In the lawsuit, Ozenir Paulo, 57, claims the dog viciously attacked her and bit her in leg at the family’s New York residence on Park Avenue. She said the dog would not release its grip on her leg until the dog’s owner came and pulled it away.

Costa Kensington, the attorney for the dog’s owner, 30-year-old Andres Santo Domingo, said Paulo’s claim is an exaggeration of the truth, and that the bite occurred more than three years ago. She also said the bite was minor and that all of Paulo’s medical bills were paid for by the family.

The Santo Domingo family is considered one the richest families in the world. Andres’ father, Julio Mario Santo Domingo, has an estimated fortune of $4 billion.

If you or a loved one has been bitten or attacked by a dog, you have legal rights that could entitle you to compensation. Following a dog bite or attack, it’s best to consult an experienced dog bite lawyer right away who can review the facts of your case to determine whether or not the owner of the dog can be held liable for damages. Upon the successful resolution of your claim, you could be awarded compensation for your pain and suffering, emotional anguish, disfigurement, lost wages, medical bills, and decreased quality of life.
