Officer Dies in Jail Crash
|
At the Pinellas County Jail, an auto accident that led to the death of an employee is currently under investigation. Police say that the accident occurred in a secure area of the jail - an area which the public cannot access.
The Sheriff's office reports that a 44 year old corrections officer who by the name of Sgt. Richard Keyser was off duty at the time drove through a fence and into a nearby retention pond. Witnesses told authorities that Keyser was in his personal car when it suddenly accelerated and left the roadway.
From the jail's SkyFox, tire tracks heading toward the pond from the metal fence are clearly visible. Divers were called to the jail to recover Keyser's body and vehicle.
At this time, the Major Accident Team is looking into the details surrounding the crash, specifically why Keyser was in the area when the accident occurred.
